Music that Lifts Me Up

I like music. Who doesn't? Christian music is my favorite music to listen to. It's uplifting, encouraging and positive. I really like listening to christian music when things are not going great. It helps me get through things easier and the music reminds me that I am not alone and there is hope. These are some of my favorite songs. Enjoy.

1. You love me anyway by Sidewalk Prophets
2. Light up the Sky by The Afters
3. You Lift Me Up by The Afters
4. Forgiven by Sanctus Real
5. Strong Tower by Kutless
6. Your Love by Brandon Heath
7. Strong Enough by Matthew West
8. Down by Mat Kearney
9. Beautiful by Mercy Me
10. Restless by Switchfoot

Here are some of the songs....

Strong Enough

This past month I have cried more times than in my whole entire life...well, at least it seems that way. The events in my life that have taken place in the last few weeks have been super hard for me. Only a very few people know what has been going on, and I thank those people from the bottom of my heart for being there for me, counseling me and just being a listening ear.

I have not enjoyed what I have had to go through in the last month, and there was a few times where I wasn't sure if I could get through it and I even wanted to walk away from the situation. I know that there is a reason why I am going through this hard time. God had this planned out and there is something to be learned here. I think that I may be at the tail end of this super hard trial (at least I hope so) and I can see now what benefits this trial will bring.

I've spent a lot of alone time (not my choice) and during this time of being alone, I have been able to reflect on who I am, who I want to be and changes I can apply to be the person I ultimately want to become. I have reflected on my relationships with friends and family, my marriage and the ultimate one, my relationship with God.

I actually feel like I have grown as a person in the last month. I haven't felt this way in a long, long time. I guess this trial was something I needed...even though I wish it was a bit less harsh. :)

I still have my up's and down's and still feel uncertain at times, but I hope that once things start settling down in my life, I hope that things will be better than ever and that I can continue to grow into that woman I want to be.

A song that has really hit home with me during this time is "Strong Enough" by Matthew West. It's been kind of motivating to me and comforts me in a musical way.

Security

As my prison journey starts in a couple of weeks, I have decided to make my 2 blogs (this one and my prison blog) private and only selected people can view the blogs. Why? Because the inmates I will be working with have access to the internet and they are curious of who I am (as well as the other facilitators) and I don't want them to find my blogs (which I have Googled and have found myself easily). I want to keep things private as much as possible, especially when it could impact my safety and security. If you would like to be one of the ones who would like to read my blogs, give me your email address and I will add you to my list of readers. :)

Confusion and Heartache

The last two weeks of my life has been tough. Everything was going great...until my husband, who works 60+ hours a week this summer, plus working on a few on-going school projects had a break down. At least that's what I call it.

For the past 2 weeks I have been living with an imposter. This man I share a life with looks like the man I love, but isn't acting like the man I know. He is always gone, and when I do see him, he wants to be left alone. He rather talk to other people, like his co-works than the people that love him the most. This behavior creates much heartache and confusion for me.

Why is this happening?

The only thing that I think is causing this "break down," is that my husband doesn't understand how big his plate is. He takes on way too much stuff, thus creating stress and tension on him and his family. I wish that he didn't feel like he had to take on everything that comes his way. Doesn't he know that he is not only causing problems for himself, (i.e. lack of sleep, headaches, muscle tension, etc), but causing problems with the relationship of his wife (me) and other family members?

I understand to a point why he takes on a lot. He is suppose to be the leader of this household, so he has to work to support our little family. I get that. I also understand when you are offered great learning opportunities, you take all you can get to build a resume. But shouldn't there be a boundary of how much you take on?

I remember the last two terms of my undergrad. I was pulling 18 credits each term and was literally running from work to three back to back classes every other day. I had to do this because if I didn't, I couldn't graduate that spring. I learned my lesson. I did eventually have a break down. I promised myself I would never put myself into a situation like that again. It was very stressful and hard on my body. I am more mindful of what I take on in my life so I don't have to feel that way again.

I wish my husband could learn from his break-downs. Maybe I will get lucky and he will learn from this one? I just wish that he wouldn't take on so much and that he will be able to be more balanced in life. He doesn't get a day off. Everyone should have at least one day off a week to rest and relax! I am worried about my husband's health. He doesn't sleep, has stress levels off the chart, headaches and neck tension. This guy is only 27!

Instead of my man figuring things out on his own, I wish he would seek positive counsel, like a pastor that could give him advice and guidance. I think that would help. I don't know where or who he is going/seeking for help or how he is processing things, but it kind of scares me because I get the impression that it's not positive or he is getting the appropriate guidance he needs. I am afraid that when this is "over," he will be changed and it won't be for the better. I pray that he will be a better person when this is done.

At this point, I don't know what to do. I have prayed and continue to pray and had counsel. I just want things to be back to normal. I don't know how many nights I can spend home alone and wonder when he will be home (since he doesn't communicate), or constantly getting ignored and feeling like I am the worst person in his eyes. He says "it's not not me....just him," but he makes me feel like I'm his enemy. He wants my support and help, but it's hard when I feel like I'm the biggest joke and not getting treated well. I bend over backwards for him to help him, but I feel like he doesn't appreciate me. Instead, I just get grumpt at. Therefore, I have been spending my recent days crying my eyes out.

I can't wait until the day we can cuddle on the couch, go on a date night, have dinner together and just have peace between us. Why do I feel like I will have to wait a while for this? I'm so sad. I shouldn't have to be going through this pain. My heart is broken and not sure if it will ever be repaired.

The Beach

The beach is one of my favorite places to be. I love how the sands feels in between my toes, the sun shinning on my face, the sea shells you find, the ocean waves crashing and looking out in the distance and knowing that the ocean connects with a foreign land. The beach is a relaxing place for me. I love all of the sounds it has to offer. I am amazed how beaches are different in all locations. I have been to beaches in Hawaii, Florida, Bahamas, Mexico, California, and Washington and each one has been unique in their own way.

Last weekend we were in Newport, Oregon. The weather was great. It was sunny and warm. It wasn't windy or raining (like usual). My sister found 4 full sand dollars, which is rare (at least for us). The surf was perfect. If I had a wet suit and a surfboard, I would have been out in the ocean having fun. Instead, I watched the other surfers hang ten.

My dogs also love the beach. Riley and Katie ran, played and of course they went into the water. Riley did most of the swimming. He followed me out into the water. I was only about knee to quad deep (as the currents were a little strong and didn't feel like making the news of getting swept out to sea). It was so cute to see him jump over the waves and one time he rode in with one.

I am thankful for the beach/ocean and what it has to offer. I can't wait until the next time I get to walk barefoot on the sand and explore what the waves washed up to shore.

A Day in the Life of The Lehr's

A common word I hear when I tell someone about the day in the life of The Lehr's, people say "Wow." I think it's weird. What's so "wow" about it? In my mind I think it's normal to live a busy life, but the more and more I think about it, maybe it's not normal. But what is normal anyway, right? People today are busy. We all are racing against time, but I do admit, I feel like we are running a marathon and it's just a matter of time we collapse from our hectic lives.

A typical day for us:

5:30 a.m. the first alarm goes off (like this) "ding, ding..Good Morning, Good Morning...BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA...it's going to be a beautiful day." It is the most ANNOYING alarm of all time. I hate that alarm, which is why John chose it (so nice of him, huh?). Usually he get's up right away (on most days). He is a morning person. I am NOT! It usually takes me about 45 minutes to get out of bed, and most of the time John literally has to get me out of bed.

Depending on the day, we are out the door between 7:00-7:15 a.m. Because we share a car, times and who get's dropped off first varies, but usually I am the one dropping John off to physical therapy, a doctors appointment, school or work. Then I'm off to work. I'm suppose to be at work by 8, but lots of times I'm late. Mornings are usually rushed, especially when there is bad traffic. We have gotten to the point where if traffic is bad, I drop John off near my work so he can catch the street car and go to where he is going that day. That has helped and haven't been as late to work.

As most of you know, I'm a preschool cook and a substitute teacher. Being a cook for 50 little kids is hard work. I'm on my feet the whole time and 3 of the 5 classes are upstairs, so over the last three years of being the cook, I have learned how to balance a heavy tray of food very nicely. In fact, I've only dropped a tray 2 times, and that was because I wasn't paying attention because I was talking to someone. Thankfully, it was just milk! Other duties are ordering food, putting the food away, organizing the menu, doing dishes and problem solve when a certain item of food didn't get purchased or something else isn't going to work out. Also, assisting other teachers when they need something from the kitchen because they are doing a project for their kids. I'm also on the safety committee, so I do inspections at my site and attend monthly meetings.

On a "normal" day, I am finished at 1:00 p.m., but often times I'm asked to substitute in the afternoon. When I do get off at the normal time, I usually have to rush to something. Sometimes it's to a doctors appointment or running errands. Other times it's just going home and taking care of the dogs and doing laundry, dishes, preparing dinner, homework, etc. This is until I have to go pick up John around 4:30 p.m. (or whenever he needs to be picked up that day). Then it's off to something else. Most of the time John needs to be taken to Taekwondo. Sometimes he needs to go to a meeting or has a class he needs to attend. I often feel like a human taxi driver. I do a lot of driving around. There are times where I need to be somewhere in the evening, so often times we just switch. It's a a transfer of car keys, an exchange of a hug and a kiss and saying "Hi" and "Bye" in the same breath.

We usually don't get home until 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. One would think that we cam relax. Ummm, I wish! Usually it's eating dinner. Yes, I know eating past 7 is bad...I'm trying to figure out how to eat earlier in the evening. After dinner, it's homework or whatever we have to finish before we go to bed. We try to schedule "our" time before bed, but that doesn't always work out. We get to bed between midnight and 1:00a.m. Then our busy day starts again 4.5 hours later.

As you can probably tell, we are very busy people. John in my opinion is busier. He is ALWAYS on the go. Never able to stop and relax. I could be just as busy, but last year when I was literally running to class, work and other activities, I had a nervous breakdown and vowed that I wouldn't allow myself to be THAT busy again.

We don't like being this busy at times, but for now, that is how it is. We have to work. We have to go to school. And of course we have to make time for us. Which is easier on the weekends than weekdays. It is hard juggling everything, but somehow we do it.

The one thing that really irritates me is how other people don't seem to be more understanding of John and I. We are sorry that we can't respond to your email or text message sooner than you want or that we didn't provide a long enough response. We are sorry we may not be able to call you when you want. We are sorry that we can't go to a party or to an activity that we are invited to. It's not that we don't care, it's just hard to get everything done in a day.

I just wish people wouldn't get their panties in a bunch because we are not as sociable. We can't please everyone. I'm getting so tired of people getting upset at us because we don't meet peoples expectations.

Why can't people let us be a husband and wife and let us build OUR future? Seriously?!? Conflict and drama is something that I don't want is this family, but it seems as if we never make anyone happy. People should be more understanding. It's not like we party every night, do drugs, or spend money on senseless things. We work hard to be the best employee, the best student, the best spouse, the best family member, the best friend and the best volunteer. So please people, give us a break!

Weekend with Mom

Last weekend was so much fun. My Mom came to visit as I wasn't really looking forward to another weekend hanging out at home by myself. I was in need of some mother-daughter time, especially since I don't get to see her since she (and my dad and sister) live 5 hours away. I also got to see my Dad for a couple of hours as well, so that made the weekend even better.

One would ask, "what did you and your mom do?" Well, we didn't do much...just went to the mall 3 times!!! LOL. It was awesome. It was so fun looking through all the stores and trying on clothes and just being a girl. Something that's hard to do when it's just the hubby and I don't really have any other friends to be "girls" with.

It was also nice having someone to talk to. Yes, John listens, but he's different. He's not Mom. It was really hard when it was time for her to go home. I really didn't want her to leave. I miss my family so much. I miss mom-daughter time, sister-sister time and dad-daughter time. I guess there is a reason why we live apart, but I just wish that it was easier to get together and have more fun.

Having Faith Encourages Me

I'm sitting here at my computer feeling a little discouraged, but also encouraged at the same time. This summer hasn't been all great. For starters, we may be in summer months, but it doesn't feel like summer at all. I crave just warm, sunny days for weeks and weeks. Instead, it's cloudy, rainy, sunny and sometimes all at the same time. This happened last summer as well, so I am in need of some warm, sunny weather to soak my skin into.

Another bummer thing is that John and I's schedules are way different than usual. John works on the weekends and when he has the day "off," I'm at work. Having quality time has been tough, but I know that this "schedule" won't be for too much longer...I hope.

I can sit here and complain how my summer isn't going like I want it too, but no one wants to hear someone complain. I personally can't handle very much complaining from people, especially those who complain about everything and are not grateful for what they have or things that are petty and selfish.

I know that these rough times that I have mentioned and haven't mentioned on here is temporary and God is in control. He works in mysterious ways. I find it funny that I have been winning concert tickets. John and I love going to concerts and we can't afford to go to a lot this summer. However, I have been blessed with some free concert tickets and been able to have some fun with not only my husband, but a friend as well. I've also been provided other opportunities, such as babysit my friend's (who is a massage therapist) daughter and instead of getting paid, I get a massage. I'm down with that, especially since I have been needing one real bad. Also, I noticed the other day I was getting low on garlic and other pantry items. I said, "I better put that on the list." Well, today a co-worker who is moving gave me some garlic and other pantry items that I have been needing. As funny as all of that may sound, I am confident that is God working in little ways, but make a huge impact in my life.

I am also excited that I am starting to connect with some Godly women. I have been praying that God directs me to some Christian women that I can get to know. Living in Portland is hard, especially when your a christian. I am very different from the majority and I find that I'm a minority. I only want to be surrounded by Godly people and it's hard to find those around here. I've made some contacts with old family friends as well as my pastors wife, who seems to be a wonderful lady. I suspect that I will be getting together with them soon once we figure out our schedules. I can't wait. I know that God is directing me to the right people, it's just that sometime it takes time and patience.

No one knows what the future holds for them. Some may worry, but as a Christian, I don't have to worry. I have faith that God will direct me...and my husband in the right direction. I know God will take care of us and I look forward to what is provided. Even when times are tough, I know that there is a reason for this challenge and if you have faith, you will succeed.

The love of my life

"A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, and always with the same person." - Mignon McLaughlin

I will never forget April 15, 2005. It was a nice sunny warm day. I had worked all day long at a woman's health fair and was looking forward to going home and getting ready for a big date I had that night. I was nervous. I hadn't been on a date for a while because guys in the past didn't impress me and was tired of getting disappointed. However, I had a different feeling about the date I was about to go on. I thought I would give this guy a chance and see what happens.

My date showed up early. I had just gotten home and didn't have time to get ready. My sister answered the door (as I was brushing my teeth). I finish up and greeted my date at the door. My first impression was "wow, this guy doesn't look too bad!" He was wearing jeans, a nice button down shirt, a black wool jacket, black vans, hair was gelled with a little spike and he smelled sooo good. I introduced my date to my mom and of course my sister and then we were off to go see the movie "Sahara." I don't really remember the movie to be honest. I was still nervous and I kept looking at this handsome fella out the corner of my eye. After the movie, we were both starving, so we went to Red Robin. I had a chicken caesar salad and he had chicken strips with fries. We had great conversation and I quickly became impressed by my date. I quickly realized that he was special and that he would be in my life for a very long time.

We finished eating and I figured it was time to go home (especially since I had to be somewhere early the next morning), but apparently he didn't want to take me home yet. So we went and played pool. He had to teach me since I never did it before. I was awful, but that's ok. He then took me home and we both said goodnight. I left feeling good about the night and was actually looking forward to a possible second date. A second date did happen two days later and that's when I knew that my date would eventually be my husband and the love of my life.

John and I met in our law research class in January 2005. I actually talked to him first because at the beginning of the term, we had to introduce ourselves to each other and I took notice that we had interests in common and I admired his goals as a person. We talked back and forth for a couple of months until he said we should "hang out sometime." At first I was hesitant, because I was afraid I would end up dating another jerk, but something in my heart and gut said to go for it. I am so glad I did.

Three months after we started dating, he proposed to me. The proposal wasn't anything special, but at the time I had been dealing with pneumonia and hadn't been feeling well for a couple of weeks. He had been taking care of me and he wanted to make me feel better by asking me to marry him. I know that many people were in shock and I am sure some where not happy about the sudden proposal, but we didn't care what people thought. We were both adults and who has the right to say who we can and can't love?

May 13, 2006 was the best day ever! Our wedding day was perfect. I didn't want to leave our reception because I was having so much fun! The last five years of marriage has had it's up's and down's. We have gone through a lot (family tragedies, health problems, job losses, moving, etc, etc) but I wouldn't change a thing. Being a wife is my favorite thing in the whole world.

My husband is a great man. I see him change into a better man every day. I am often impressed and thankful for his intelligence, talents, loyalty, faithfulness, honor and love he brings to our little family. I am really lucky to have him as a husband because he is far from a 'dead beat' like many other wives have as husbands. My man is always looking for opportunities to better himself and us. He is legit.

I don't know how I got so lucky. Over time, I can see more and more of why we are together. I love the fact that sometimes we think or blurb out the same things at the same time. We are very connected at times! God willing, I hope that we will be able to spend many years together and see each other turn gray (well...I have some grays, but you know what I mean). I love you John Michael-Eric Lehr!!!

Mom & Dad

Thank you, Mom
Thank you, Dad
Three small words.
So much to add.
For all your love
and your support
a million words
would be too short.
The words, "I love you"
seem too few
to express the love
I have for you.
-anonymous

I have really great parents! I am lucky to still have both parents that are STILL married and are still in love. Growing up, I remember a lot of my friends having divorced parents and having to take turns every other weekend. I am so glad that I didn't have to go through that growing up. My Mom and Dad are the best. They have always been there for me and has supported me through thick and thin.

My Dad is one of the hardest workers I know. He is always working (which does have it's downsides), but he know he is the leader of the Wolff pac and needs to support us as a family. I admire my dad's ambitions and his talents as a businessman, a woodworker and of course a husband and father. The older I get, the more I see my Dad in myself. We have a lot in common, such as: our mysterious facial expressions, hard working, traditional, having strong morals and values and being picky about what's appropriate to see and hear on T.V., movies, etc...(note, we were not allowed to watch rated R movies growing up. In fact, it took begging and pleating to even watch PG 13 movies!).

Even though I did not agree at some of the things dad didn't let us do or see at the time, I now see reasons why he thought the way he thought or acted the ways he did. He is a protector of his women (Mom, Erin and me). There needs to be more dad's like mine. Dad's who are honest, honorable, has integrity, respectful, faithful, and loving.

My top 10 memories of my Dad:
1. Wresting
2. Rescuing a skunk
3. Teaching me how to drive
4. Forgetting to pick me up one day after school in 2nd grade
5. Recording a commercial on the radio
6. Teaching me how to tie my shoes
7. Going to Huntington Beach, CA
8. Going to Las Vegas, NV and going on top of the Stratosphere
9. Basketball
10. Walking me down the aisle at my wedding and doing our special hand shake

My Mom is a very special woman. I admire her strengths and talents. I have seen many dynamics of my mom growing up. I've seen her in a professional setting, as a student and a stay at home mom and taking care of us kids. I always loved coming home from school and knowing my mom would be home. It was comforting to know that she would be there, especially when it was a tough day at school. My Mom sacrifices a lot for our family and I have never heard her complain. One of the things I am most proud of is that my Mom graduated college last year and made history in the family. She is the only family member in her family that has a college degree! Go Mom!

I also see a little bit of my Mom in myself. Again, we are hard working, loving, creative, and smart. My Mom is the 'strong tower' in the Wolff pac and I am so grateful that I have a wonderful Mom that has always been there for me and has taught me valuable skills and lessons that a girl should experience from their mothers.

My top10 Memories of my Mom
1. Girl Scouts
2. The Adventurous/Back packing/cycling trips
3. Scrapbooking
4. Wedding dress shopping
5. Band concerts
6. Shopping
7.Talking on the phone
8. Graduation
9. Being in the parades
10. Camping

I love you Mom and Dad! Thank you for everything! XOXO

Sister, Sister

"A sister is a gift to the heart, a friend to the spirit, a golden thread to the meaning of life."
-- Isadora James
For 9 years of my life, I was an only child. I remember always wanting a sister, mainly to have someone to play with and have a real true friend. I knew that wasn't possible because my mom's doctor told my mom after a tubal pregnancy when I was 3ish that she wouldn't be able to have any more children.

I remember I was in 3rd grade and my mom had lunch with me at school. She said "I have a surprise for you, but Dad and I will tell you when you get home from school." I was trying to guess what it was, but my mom wouldn't tell me. I remember when I got home and sitting on the chair in the living room, mom and dad looked real excited and my dad said that I was going to have a brother or sister. I remember oddly asking "do we get to keep it?" I guess I've never really been good with my words...but it was shock and confusion that set in because I couldn't believe I was going to be a big sister.

For many months, I prayed and prayed and even wished on my birthday candles on my 9th birthday that I would get a sister since. All summer I couldn't wait until the due date, which was towards the end of August/beginning of September. On September 4th, my dad woke me up in the middle of the night saying it was time to go to the hospital. What timing that was since that was the first day of 4th grade and my mom and dad promised me that I could be there for the delivery. Also, I remember styling my hair some funky way and I had to go to the hospital with my bangs sticking up in the air and my hair looking like a mess...real embarrassing for a 4th grader.

I have to be honest, labor was boring! We waited a long time and it was hard to see my mom in pain, especially when the baby was not positioned correctly and was pushing on her back. It was noon and the doctor said "it's time." I got super excited. 30 minutes went by and the baby came out. Guess what it was?? A girl!!! Yes, my wish came true. I was the happiest girl in the world.

Having a baby in the house was interesting, but mom and dad let me help. I learned at a young age on how to change diapers, feed babies, put them to sleep, etc. I even had to rescue my sister two times because she was choking on a frito and a penny. Actually, back to the frito incident...I remember a couple of days before that, I watched a morning show and they showed what to do if your baby is choking. I remember listening closely because I figured that information would come in handy. I remember when Erin was choking and my mom couldn't get it out. I said "let me try." I applied what I learned from the show and sure enough, it worked. I was so proud of myself.

Having a sister was different than I thought. In fact, when she was a toddler, she was so annoying. She would destroy my things and I couldn't have a clean room because she would mess things up. Argh! However, those years went by quickly. It's funny when people ask me if I have any siblings. Of course I say yes and that we are 9 years apart. I love the looks and response I get. They always ask if there is anyone in the middle. I say nope! And they still look confused.

I almost lost Erin when I was 17. My dad had some bee boxes on our 10 acre property. One afternoon, my dad went to check out the bees and Erin went with. Erin got stung and my mom took her to the house to get some benadryl just in case she got any reaction since this was her first time getting stung by a bee. We had just enough medicine. Within minutes, she started to change. She got pale looking, her skin started to rash and she was puffing up like a marshmallow right in front of me. Then she said she couldn't breathe. Of course my mom called 911.Since we lived out in the country, any emergency assistance would take longer than usual. We were all confused...and freaking out. The ambulance arrived and was able to help Erin. The paramedic said that if my mom hadn't have given Erin the benadryl, she would have died. Turns out Erin is deathly allergic to bee stings (obviously). Shortly after, the bee boxes went away and my dad retired from that hobby.

For being 9 years apart, Erin and I are really close. I do admit we had our rough moments when she was in high school. We fought a lot and didn't see eye to eye, but we are starting to grow closer again. Erin graduated last year from high school and now she is in beauty school. I am so proud of her. I really admire how hard she works and that she is pursuing what she always has wanted to do. Even though she has only been in beauty school since February, she does great work and I am even impressed by her skills.

The only sad thing is that we don't live near each other. We live about 5 hours away. It's really hard because I miss having sister, sister time and doing fun things together. But it seems that when we are together, it's like distance hasn't hindered us at all. I love that.

I am so thankful that God provided Erin in my life. I will always cherish the memories we had and the memories we will create in the future.

Here is my top ten favorite memories I have had with Erin:

1. The day she was born
2. The last night of our Hawaii trip
3. Erin visiting me in college
4. Being my maid of honor at my wedding
5. Spending the weekend just us two as mom and dad went away
6. Riding the bus home from school
7. Dressing up and putting make up on each other and pretending we were at the Oscars
8. Graduation
9. Girl Scouts
10. *Sparkles*

I LOVE YOU ERIN!!! YOU ARE THE BEST SISTER IN THE WORLD!!!

Maybe, Baby?

Ha, not yet. In the last 5 years (since we have been married), occasionally we get asked the question, "so when are you going to have kids?" We both awkwardly laugh and say "sometime." To be honest, I am starting to get the baby itch. I think some of it is that I'm being influenced by the women around me. Last year alone, I knew about 10 of my friends who had babies. This year, 2 of my friends had sweet little ones and a couple of my friends are currently prego and are due next year. Since I have been married for 5 years and I am 29, I do admit that I'm feeling the pressure to have a baby, but also wanting to add to the family. I have been for about a year now. I'm very curious about what it's like to be pregnant, give birth and raise a child. I have been reading the book, "What to expect when your expecting." and I recently bought the follow up book (for 25 cents) and been reading about what to expect at age 1. There is a lot of valuable information in those books. Things I didn't even think about! I do like the part where it talks about pre-pregnancy. Again, lots of information.

For the last 3-4 weeks, my pastor has been discussing parenting and roles that parents have when raising a child. His sermons have been very interesting and informative, especially when I don't even know what it's like to raise a child. But what he said was information I/we needed to hear. John and I have had the baby talk. We determined that we are not ready, but soon. I don't want to raise my child in a 2 bedroom townhome. I think a baby deserves a home, big enough to crawl around and explore in the back yard, and have resources it needs to be healthy. I want to be able to provide my child with opportunities and a great family life. I really think that is important and that is what I want.

Last Sunday at the last parenting sermon, it totally hit me that God will provide a child in our lives in the future, but not right now. I am still growing as a woman, as a wife...and still trying to master who I am and who I want to become. John is doing the same. I feel relieved about this because I was feeling worried and anxious. But I know God has a plan. We may not be the "typical" family, but that's okay. Who says we have to start a family a year or two after we get hitched?

So, until we hear the words "your pregnant," I will continue to educate myself about pregnancy and parenting, but also learn more about myself, about my husband...and master what we have going on now before deciding to add to the Lehr household. I am excited for what's ahead in our future...and what we will learn and experience.

Doggy, Dog Life

Dogs. They are very unusual, but yet lovable creatures. I have 2 dogs. One, is a black lab named Katie (who is 4) and a chocolate lab named Riley (who is 1 1/2). Yep...we own 2 labs..and yes, we KNOW now that we are crazy. It's amazing how both dogs are alike, but yet so different.

Katie was a valentines gift for me from John the year we were first married. I remember a couple of days before valentines day that I specifically said "I'm not ready for a dog and the responsibility right now." Oddly enough, a 8 week old puppy entered our home a few days later. Katie is a different dog. She is very needy. She whines all the time, barks at every little noise and can really get on your nerves...fast! But what I love about her is how her little ears flap in the wind when she sticks her head out of the window of the car. I love how she cuddles next to me when I take a nap, watch a movie or even do homework. I also think it's funny that she doesn't like kids. Seriously...she barks at them and gets anxious when she hears a baby cry. This could be a problem in a couple of years when we have a little one, but that's something to worry about later. :) Over time, she has become a good dog, but still has some behavioral issues time to time. Katie is and will always be my valentine puppy.

Riley or should I say Romeo...is a lover and a cutie pie. John and I got to know Riley when he was born. We were on a breeders waiting list. Our breeder gave us notice when Mocha (Riley's mom) had her babies. Our breeder posted up pictures weekly of all the puppies and a description of how they were doing, etc. By week 4, we got to go visit the puppies. We were interested in a male dog because John was tired of being the only man in the house lol. Mocha had 3 male puppies. A "yellow" one, "orange" and "blue" (which was Riley). I fell in love with all 3 puppies. However, there was one family in front of us on the wait list that got to pick before us, so I was trying not to get too attached. On week 6, we went back to visit the puppies. I remember they were getting so big. I still wasn't trying to get attached, but I really liked "blue." Then week 8 came and we were able to actually take our puppy home. I was hoping to take home "blue." When we pulled up to the breeders home, who was waiting for us at the door step? "Blue!" I was so happy and because he was waiting for us, it was a sign that he was meant for us.

When we got home and introduced "Blue" to Katie, it was interesting to say the least. Katie was hyper as usual, and Riley was freaked out, but within the hour, Riley and Katie were, and still are best friends. Riley grew like a weed, which we didn't expect since Katie grew slow and she is small. As of January, Riley was 80lbs and Katie is 50lbs.

Because of how strong Riley is, I often times get frustrated with him because he over powers me. I know he doesn't realize what he is doing, but getting hurt by him is not fun. It's funny to see Katie and Riley play. They can play really rough, but they still play with their tails wagging. Riley and I have a special bond. Though, Riley can get very jealous because of this. If I am petting Katie, then Riley will literally push Katie out of the way so he can get a pat on the head. If John is sitting by me on the couch and he get's up to get something, Riley will quickly sit in John's place until he is forced to move. It's funny to watch him. The other night, I was feeling a bit sad and I was laying on the bed. Riley jumped up and laid next to me and he put his chin on my shoulder. I could tell he knew I was sad and was trying to comfort me. Then came Katie and she laid next to me too. I felt so much love between these two dogs.

Both of these dogs are my guard dogs. They are very protective of me..and even John. Even though I don't think he needs protection since he has a black belt in taekwondo...:)

Even though I often feel like the movie Marley and Me is based upon my life, I love my dogs. It's amazing what dogs can bring into a family and in a persons heart.

The shell life....

Well, I did it. I finished my first year of grad school! This time next year, I will be graduating and also preparing to move (hopefully somewhere warmer and not as rainy!!!). This last year has been interesting to say the least. I have learned a lot, not only about conflict resolution, but about myself too. I've also have been re-reminded that being shy and quiet, sucks.

Since moving to Portland 3 years ago, I have been in my shell that I can't get out of. The move really got to me. I moved away from family, friends and from a job that I enjoyed and where I had confidence and really felt like I was good at something. Even though I have lived here for 3 years, I'm still adjusting...and still trying to get out of my shell. I hate being in this shell. Seriously!

It makes it even harder when my husband who is a "chatty Kathy" and is able to get all of these opportunities because he socializes and get's out there. I admit, I get jealous because I want opportunities too, but I have a hard time getting out there. I've been cursed by the shy bug my whole life, and my whole life I have been watching from the sidelines and that's no fun. Problem is, I don't know how to get out and achieve things for myself. I think some of it is fear. In the past, when I have been more outgoing, I got hurt in many ways and lost trust in a lot of people. I'm afraid that if I get out there, I will get hurt again. Isn't that pathetic?

With being in grad school, I've slowly been able to get out there, but it's still hard. Especially when I feel like no one likes me. I look forward to this time next year, not only because I will be achieving a Master's degree, but next school year will be very different and I'm having to get out there. I recently been accepted to the Insight Development Group (for my practicum), which is where I will be going to a prison once a week and leading facilitation's with inmates who have committed all types of crime, such as murder, sexual assault, robbery, drugs, etc. I am scared to death. Not because of being with inmates, but because I have to talk in front of these people! But I think this experience will be good for me in a lot of different ways. I just hope eventually I will be able to climb out of my shell and be who I want to be.

Soul Surfer

Tonight, I got the honor of seeing the inspirational movie "Soul Surfer" before it is released to the general public on April 8th. This movie is AMAZING! I am a little biased though because I love Hawaii and I love surfing, but this movie really spoke to me and I feel like I could really connect with the story.

Some of you may have heard of the young surfer girl from Hawaii who's arm got bitten off by a shark a few years ago. Her name is Bethany Hamilton. She has been an inspiration to many all over the world, and as of now, I feel inspired by her actions and her faith in God.

When something major and awful happens in our lives, we often ask or even blame God for the incident and wonder why he would plan for that event to happen in our lives. I have experienced a traumatizing event in my life. Afterward, I did wonder why I had to go through such trauma. Why me I asked? But after a while, it occurred to me that God wants me to use that situation into something positive.

This is what happened to Bethany. She was confused at first why she had to encounter such trauma and hardship. But she realized she had a gift, and she used her situation to inspire others. We learn to never give up and to have faith in God.

This is a must see movie. I was thrilled with the fact that it had a lot of well known actors (Dennis Quaid, Hellen Hunt, Craig T. Nelson, Carrie Underwood, and Kevin Sorbo) are involved in a movie where faith and God was praised and encouraged.

Go See It! April 8th!

The Way to a Man's Heart is Through his Stomach

At this moment, I am pretty stoked right now. Why you may ask? Well, it's because I tried something new for dinner and my husband totally loved it! One might be thinking this is totally lame. But to me, I find it satisfying. I have been wanting to make mini pizzas for a while now. Since I have a food allergy to dairy, eating my favorite food has been depressing. However, I got the idea of using pitas as a crust (since there is no dairy in pitas) and of course going without cheese on my pizza. When I presented this idea to John to see if that is what he wanted for dinner, he didn't look too thrilled, but agreed that mini pita pizzas would be okay for dinner tonight. I got some of our favorite toppings: pineapple, olives, peperoni, mushrooms and broccoli. I created the pizzas and ten minutes later, out came some good looking pizzas. At this point, I was still a little worried that John wouldn't like the pizzas, but I was wrong. He totally loved them! I just love it when he enjoys my cooking. He also complimented on my cooking last night, which we had steak, asparagus and avocado.

When I cook...and others like my cooking, I get full satisfaction, especially when I don't follow a recipe and I just create. I never knew that I would feel this way after I get the thumbs up after dinner. In the last five years of marriage, I have gotten more thumbs up than down. From the beginning, I asked John to always tell me when I didn't make something very tasty. I didn't want to be lead on and certainly didn't want to continue making the same dish when all along he didn't like it. At first, I assumed that I would get a lot of thumbs down, but to my surprise, I wasn't that bad of a cook from the beginning. Yes, I have improved, but at least we didn't eat burnt dinners every night of our first year of marriage. :)

As a wife, I always want to make my husband happy. I am so glad that feeding him with good food isn't that hard for me to achieve. Feeling satisfied is such a good feeling, especially when it's from your spouse. I am so glad that every night, I am able to have the chance to make my husband happy and feeling like I did a good deed.

I am looking forward to all of the new food ideas to come and the satisfaction I will get after I put a great meal in my husbands tummy.

True Joy

Since the beginning of January, we have been talking about True Joy while studying the book of Philippians at church. Our Pastor has done a great job every Sunday analyzing and preaching the letter that Paul wrote. I have gotten a lot out of this book and it seems as if every Sunday, our pastor says the things that I need to hear.

Last week really hit me. Lately, I have been questioning..or thinking about the kind of people I want in my life. Who are my role models? Am I surrounding myself with people that bring me joy? The answer to this is yes...and no. I don't really have any quality Godly role models. I do have some, but not enough. At least none that I interact with on a regular basis. I feel that it's important to surround yourself with Godly role models and I hope that I can find some. For me to be the woman I am called to be, requires me to know these people. I'm not talking about the "Christians" that are only "Christians" on Sundays...I'm talking about true, Godly people. Unfortunately, these people are hard to find. So I guess from this point on, I have to pray that God will help me find the people I'm seeking. I know he wants the best for me, so I am not too worried that I won't find any role models.

In regards to being surrounded with people that bring me joy, this is tough. Of course I have a handful of wonderful people in my life, but I have to be honest...there are some people in my life lately that have been completely awful to me.  And get this, there are suppose to be my "family." Yep, family. Of all the people in my life, I would never expect to be treated like rubbish by family members. This is where it get's tough. In church, I'm taught to surround myself with great people, but what do you do with family members that treat you like dirt?

I am very hurt by these individuals who have treated me so poorly. I don't even know what I did to deserve this kind of treatment. I am a hard working person, that doesn't do drugs, party, get in trouble, etc. I take care of my husband, our home, our dogs, go to school and work. I do the very best I can in life and I've been told by my parents and my husband that they are proud of me. I feel like I am a target with these individuals. Why? I don't know.

The worst thing is that I am so hurt by the way I've been treated, but it seems that my feelings are minimized by others and it's not that big of a deal that I received this treatment. Or that I can't really say anything because it causes conflict. So I pretty much have to bottle things up and get treated like a doormat. It's so frustrating!  I just want to scream! It's not okay for them to do this to me..and my little family. But of course, they will get way with it..and my feelings will be brushed aside, just to save a little conflict. Meanwhile my blood pressure is sky high because I'm so ANGRY. Yes, ANGRY with these people. I know I said hurt before, but I'm ANGRY.

At this point, I am not sure what I am going to do with these people. My main priority is surrounding myself with people that are Godly role models, that brings me joy and people I love the most. This situation is really in God's hands and I know God will take care of the people that have treated me un-Godly.

Take Care

It's hard being a grown up. Life seemed so much easier when I was a kid, and I often times miss my carefree days just playing and having fun. I've been an adult for 10 years now and it's hard now and then to be that adult that takes care of others, pays bills, works, goes to school, cook, clean, etc. As a woman that is a giver (at least in my eyes I am), it's honestly taken a toll on me. Lately, I feel like I am sinking in this mass ocean called life. I've come to realize that I don't take care of myself. Which, is not an uncommon thing that many wives to do. Why is that? Why don't we take time for ourselves?

My goal over spring break is to come up with ways to take care of myself and realize it's okay that dinner doesn't have to be ready when John walks in the door (not that he has complained one way or the other) or that if I don't get to the dishes one night, that's okay too. I've also put a lot of pressure on myself in regards to school. I'm in graduate school. In my program, we can't get a grade lower than a B-. I've never really had too much of a problem getting good grades, but to me, it's just that added pressure that drives me crazy. Last term I got all A's, so now, I feel like I have to get all A's for the duration on my graduate school career. Is this a little crazy for me to be thinking this? Probably. I have come to the point what I have complete anxiety about grades. Stupid, I know...especially when I know I am going to do great. And if I get a B, it's not the end of the world..right?

Ugh!

Anyway, back to taking care of myself. I've been thinking of ways on how to do this. It's a hard thing to do...and it's hard to think of things that will utterly bring me the zen that I need. My naturopath doctor has ordered me to take epsom salt baths. This is mostly for my headaches and my body aches, plus I also get me time. But I'm not always able to get baths scheduled every night. I really need to try harder at this though.

Dance is something that brings me joy. I love to dance. I haven't done it for a while and I really miss it. Thankfully I was actually able to find a ballet class that will actually fit into my schedule! I'm so excited about finally getting back into dancing. I start in a couple of weeks.

Fitness is another area I desperately need to focus on. I have gained some pounds since I've been married and I've noticed it's taking a toll on my health. I've been working out more at school, but I really need to be strict on my workout plan. Again...sometimes it's hard to stay motivated.

My diet is very important for me to follow. In October I found out that I had a food allergy to dairy as well as sugar. When I eat dairy, I feel awful. It's really hard not to eat dairy. Dairy is everywhere! I feel overwhelmed by this lifestyle change...but it's vital for me to stay strict because my health depends on it!

Lastly, I need a social life. Since moving to Portland 3 years ago, I haven't really had a social life. I really miss having friends, but since the move, I have gone into my shell and it's really hard for me to come out of my shell. I am scared. Why? Because I have a hard time trusting people. The last time I made friends, they turned out to be not very good people. Portland is different. It's very liberal and not very Christian. I feel like an outsider most of the time, therefore it's hard to make friends. But I know that I have to reach out and meet nice christian women who are a good influence on me. At this point, I have someone in mind to reach out to, but I'm still thinking about my plan of attack. :)

In a way, I am disappointed in myself that I let myself get to this point in life, but I know that I'm not perfect and I believe God is working in me and that this is his plan. I will succeed.

Are you prepared?

With the recent earthquake in Japan, it reminds me (and should others as well) that events like this can happen anywhere and at anytime. A year and a half ago I took a 11 week disaster emergency training and I learned a lot on how to respond in case of a disaster happens in my community. During one class, we talked about earthquakes and I learned that it's just a matter of time that a major earthquake will happen in Portland, Oregon. This earthquake will leave major damage to the city and surrounding areas and we as residents really have to be prepared. When I think about the devastation that could occur during my duration of my stay in the Portland area, I often times get scared at what could happen. I often think of one of those suspenseful movies where the "star" of the movie has to go through all of these obstacles in order to get to safety or see their loved ones again. I really don't want to live out one of those movies.

John and I attend school at Portland State University, which is downtown. Many of the buildings are older and will not hold up in a strong earthquake. The building at my work scares me because it is very old and I know it will not hold in an earthquake. I also get worried that John and I will be separated at the time and then we would have the challenge of getting back together again..that is if we both make it out alive. In an ideal world, I would love for us to be together if this event happens, but I can't count on ideal. Therefore, I need to know how I can take care of myself, just in case.

Though we will never know when a disaster strikes, the only thing we can do is prepare, prepare, prepare! So let me ask you this....are you prepared for a disaster to strike? Do you have a plan in place for your family if you are separated? Do you even know what you need? Do you even understand what will happen if your city is in the middle of a disaster and how emergency responders will react? These are all important things to know in regards to disasters and surviving.

When a disaster happens, emergency officials will respond to locations with mass amount of people. Thus, if you are able to call 911 for help, the likely hood that someone will respond in a quick manner is slim. Therefore, if you are hurt and if it's safe and possible, find help. If not, then take proper actions in the best interest of you and your family. This may even be staying put in your own dwelling until help arrives..which could be a couple of days.

If you are stuck in your dwelling, make sure that you have all of the supplies you need to survive for a couple of days. This includes, water, food (make sure to include a can opener), blankets, TP, garbage bags, flashlights with working batteries, a batter operated radio, rope, gloves, matches, etc.

Make a plan for your family if you are separated. This has to include a meet up spot (if possible) for your family to meet. This could be at a school, work, library, city hall, etc. Also, provide an out of town phone number for each family member to call and check in. Many of the phone lines won't be working locally, but you can call out of town easier.

These are some some of the important things you need to be thinking about. Below is a couple of helpful websites to visit and get more information on disaster planning, including what to put in your disaster kits, etc. Please prepare yourself because disasters can happen anywhere, anytime.

Love is Here

I love inspirational music. From time to time I like to share songs that really speak to me. I really like this song by Tenth Avenue North (which is great in concert). I am always reminded that no matter what, God is here with me and as long as I have God in my life, everything will be okay and that I'm loved.

Come to the water
You who thirst
And you'll thirst no more
Come to the father
You who work
And you'll work no more
And all you who labor in vain
And to the broken and shamed

Chorus
Love is here
Love is now
Love is pouring from His hands
From His brow
Love is near
It satisfies
Streams of mercy flowing from His side

'Cause love is here

Come to the treasure
You who search
And you'll search no more
Come to the lover
You who want
And you'll want no more, no
And all you who labor in vain
And to the broken and shamed
Yeah

Chorus

And to the bruised and fallen Captives bound and broken hearted
He is the Lord
He is the Lord, yeah
By his stripes
He's paid our ransom
From His wounds we drink salvation
He is the Lord
He is the Lord

Chorus
Love is here
Love is now
Love is pouring from His hands
From His brow

Love is near
It satisfies
Streams of mercy flowing from His side
Streams of mercy flowing from His side

'Cause love is here
Love is here

Hmm...what to do?

Well, It's spring break (for the most part) and I'm finding myself with a little bit of free time. I've been wanting to blog for some time now, but never really had the time. So maybe this is a time to explore the world of blogging. I don't really think anyone will read this, but I like to write. I think a lot..but don't speak my thoughts. Thus, I wind up feeling overwhelmed with thoughts and feelings. Since I was a little girl, I used to journal my thoughts and I would feel better. So maybe if I expressed my thoughts this way, it can help me grow...or even teach others. I am random with my thoughts, I like to be funny, I like writing about controversial issues, I think deep and I sometimes don't. So this should be interesting. :)
